Taken out at the Bald Hill Opal Field, Lightning Ridge N.S.W. 8:15pm EDST. 11.2.13.
This storm cell took a rather nasty turn quite rapidly. Just as I suspected it would skirt town to the East, it decided to build and push toward my location here out on the Northern edge of town. Initially I was set up on top of the hill here (about 60feet/20metres above the surrounding plains) but just as I was settling in for a few nice shots I had a monster rogue bolt arc down only a short distance behind me with a deafening crack! I actually felt the heat from that strike.
I caught the top of that close bolt in a photo. Now even though it was not raining at all where I was positioned, bolts were still arcing out around 20-25k's from the main cell in all directions making it an extremely bad and highly dangerous scenario for photography. The things we'll do for a nice photo lol.
So as you can see from the low position of this shot I rapidly moved down off the hill and headed down onto the ground about 20feet/6mtrs lower than my previous position... just in case. The rain started about two minutes after this and I had to call it a night after waiting around for a break for a bit over an hour. Lightning was very frequent with about eight storms visible in all directions.
I Have another photo from up on the hill that I may or may not post. This was the best for the evening though.
Damn! It's 71'F and sunny here in Sonoma Co. and the rest of the San Francisco Bay Area. Of course if we had even one storm like that we'd all... well it wouldn't nice.
As my brother, a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer, would say, have fun but be safe.
Our storm season is now drawing to a close as we head into Autumn so the weather has settled down somewhat. I'm looking forward to some cooler days after a fairly blistering Summer.
The burning atmosphere smell is something I've not yet experienced (and don't really want to lol) as the outflow winds/microbursts are usually too strong out in these type of multicell storms.
Feeling the heat/UV radiation from the strike is usually enough for my liking.
Not as good as I had initially hoped from the crazy amount of lightning around us. I'll take it at this late seasonal stage
Hope all is well!
I'm Alive and well, hoping the same for you.

Thanks kindly for the comment as always
