Taken at Lightning Ridge N.S.W. on the 12.01.07 at 10:45pm This was the best photo of the night! I took this out on the plains SW of Lightning Ridge. The cloud structure was amazing this particular night!
It's definitely not a composite! None of my photos are This was a little LP supercell (first one I've ever noticed here) and it was HIGHLY active. This was taken with my first camera- a hybrid digital Nikon 8700 Coolpix. The exposure time was usually set at eight seconds. It had very little in the way of manual settings so I just winged it most times.
Awesome. I have to composite the daytime shots just because of exposure limitations. Otherwise I would need the special detection equipment or sheer luck, or 'lightning' reflexes I don't posses. I do lightning photography casually and am appropriately jealous of your gallery! I don't live in an area known for great storms. This area of Nebraska, for example, is about 700 miles away from home.
Oh.. I have a photo somewhere from this storm with eight lightning bolts in it. This was during an eight second exposure also but I didn't have Infinity Focus set properly and it was slightly blurry. Still showed the ferocity of the lightning activity on this cell during the building phase when the updrafts took off (just before anviling).
Yeah I've had issues from day one about the copyright? It was either plaster it all over the photo or just put it on the border away from the picture. I went with the latter, though I do do them a little differently now. This was a fairly old photo.
These are all on our website (currently being updated) with a pretty small copyright notice.
yes the copyright/markings....it doesnt really matter what we call it as the point is its a mark of some kind which *in my opinion* spoils many an awesome shot.....i just browsed your gallery and didnt notice before that you have removed the markings except for the *title* of the shot...you have a beautiful gallery
Glad you enjoy it! We've had a few issues with our photos over the years so it's probably the best I can do. This small image size is relatively useless for most things but people still try and use it unlawfully?
Wow, I'm surprised that no one's asked you for a wallpaper before!
I asked because recently I've seen some artists offer their weather-related artwork in several sizes as a downloadable file here on DA that deviants can use as their desktop wallpaper. So I didn't know if you were doing the same or not. If you think about it, doing so could be a really neat way to promote your art and your web site. Several organizations also use certain weather-related images of theirs to promote themselves on people's desktops - such as NASA, National Geographic, and Discover Magazine.

the fact that you are using a camera with coolpix in the name is a testament to how good the skills are behind what you do Shaun, they are sensational images one of these days i will have to take a trip to lightning country
Whenever you do please feel free to drop myself or Datazoid a line!
I'd be all too happy to show you around the area and get in some time for a few creative photography chances
I had similar comments from fellow lightning enthusiasts about my poor old camera lol. It was all I had for four years until I more recently got hold of the 450D and stepped into the DSLR realms (and couldn't be happier about it!) Still have the old Nikon so I might use it for small DV captures during the next cool storms?
