Taken at Lightning Ridge N.S.W. on the 24.10.07 at 8:49pm during a nice storm carrying an RFB on it's front which is always nice for lightning photography. The lower level cloud (near the ground) is known as a roll cloud and is very rare here. It was only that the humidity was freakishly high during this storm event that it appeared, luckily it did I have never seen one before this, and subsequently haven't seen one since?
It was an amazing storm that came from a very messy and weak afternoon of grey showery weather. It was only the still high 35˚C+ temps that drove this beast into a mature phase.
The power lines overhead were crackling during this storm due to the high atmospheric charge. You'll hear that if you're ever under them with some serious lightning around
We initially thought that it was low level scud (or Pannus) ourselves but it was allot more defined and far too long-lived (about an hour) to be "normal" low level scud. Probably doesn't show that in the photos too well. It was rolling slightly due to very strong inflow. It's quite rare here due to the dryer conditions. I haven't seen anything like it since. I really wish I had something to timelapse it with at the time!
We were lucky that we stayed here as we were going to position ourselves just near the large TV tower (bottom left of shot) before the lightning really picked up in intensity. Fortunately we stayed right where we were as it was moving at a decent pace.
