Clear Air by Syndyne Clear Air by Syndyne
Taken at Lightning Ridge N.S.W. on the 24.10.07 at 8:49pm during a nice storm carrying an RFB on it's front which is always nice for lightning photography. The lower level cloud (near the ground) is known as a roll cloud and is very rare here. It was only that the humidity was freakishly high during this storm event that it appeared, luckily it did :D
I have never seen one before this, and subsequently haven't seen one since?

Thanks kindly sir!

It was an amazing storm that came from a very messy and weak afternoon of grey showery weather. It was only the still high 35˚C+ temps that drove this beast into a mature phase.

The power lines overhead were crackling during this storm due to the high atmospheric charge. You'll hear that if you're ever under them with some serious lightning around :D

Isn't that "roll cloud" a Panous cloud?
I think that it's name.... :/

We initially thought that it was low level scud (or Pannus) ourselves but it was allot more defined and far too long-lived (about an hour) to be "normal" low level scud. Probably doesn't show that in the photos too well. It was rolling slightly due to very strong inflow. It's quite rare here due to the dryer conditions. I haven't seen anything like it since. I really wish I had something to timelapse it with at the time!

Thanks so much for the comment :D

Thanks kindly Steven!

We were lucky that we stayed here as we were going to position ourselves just near the large TV tower (bottom left of shot) before the lightning really picked up in intensity. Fortunately we stayed right where we were as it was moving at a decent pace.

It's one of my favorite things to do. Especially at home when we have thunderstorms almost daily. Those few really good ones always make the monotony pass by in brighter light.

Thanks Evan!

We were lucky on this evening. It was all messy squall line rubbish for hours beforehand, all of a sudden this base formed and came towards us from the North East (which is out of the ordinary for us) Still haven't seen a low level roll cloud like this since?

Oh yeah.. did you guys manage to see or shoot any of that record sized hail?

Unfortunately, we didn't get any shots of the record hail in Vivian, SD. We certainly experienced it though! Baseball and softball-sized stones were bouncing over the car as we careened down the dirt road. Our GPS wasn't working, but luckily we found another chaser and followed him. We would have stopped to collect samples or take photos, but it was simply too dangerous. There were 3 huge dents left on the car, 2 on the hood and one right above my head =D

I guess it would be pretty frightening while stuck in it! :wow:

Maybe you guys should fix a mesh net/box on the car roof to catch the hail if you ever punch the vault area again :D

The shots from that storm were insane! I also have a copy of Mike H's new Bluray where he mentions you guys are out in it. Very cool structure.

Take it easy

Haha there's no way a mesh net could have caught that hail, it would have been destroyed :XD:
And that's cool that he mentioned us! His stuff is always incredible. I need to get a copy of his disc lol.

Yeah, it's definitely a unique name for a unique place! Unfortunately the lightning isn't as frequent as I'd like it but we can't have everything I guess? :D

Thanks for the kind comment!

the-square-root-of-3: Cloud like that is rare out here. It's what's called a Roll Cloud and usually only appears where it's hilly. It's rather flat here but I think the high moisture content in the lower levels really played it's part nicely :)

Plantsoma: Your too kind! I love the flower photography also (I'm a fan of good macro photos!)
